made it in one piece... sort of.

Hello my friends and family,

I am in Otranto finally and what a trip it has been. my laptop was broken, the airlines lost my luggage, i am bruised and blistered from head to toe and a taxi driver cheated me for lots of $$.

my sweet friend Enzo is helping me to feel safe and at home a little. he is trying to fix my laptop and helping me to get my luggage back. other saving graces... my apartment is beautiful with a big view of the ionian sea and a fireplace in my bedroom. otranto is a small town and the people here are very nice. yesterday i met Nonna (grandma) Rosa and we went for a long walk on the coastline. she taught me the names of the wildflowers and which ones are for food and which for medicine. she introduced me to her friends and she would say (in italian of course) "i met this beautiful american woman who is all alone, i will take her home to feed her" and she did make me a big meal that included familiar foods like pasta with tomato sauce, parmesan and green olives. then also some foods i have never eaten before. for example.. chicory stems sauteed in olive oil and garlic, a pickled fennel and carrot salad, a bread that needs water run over it before serving and a super good italian beer called Petroni. all the foods i have eaten here have tasted fabulous. but my stomach is not so sure if its okay...yet.

i started school today but i could not concentrate and trying gave me a headache. the jet lag is still very bad and worries about luggage etc have made normal sleep very difficult. my friend says "no coffee or cola till you start sleeping better". i am trying to follow his advice but... its not so easy.

i think it may take me a few more days to start feeling normal brain and other bodily functions lol. i will keep this blog updated when possible. i found a good internet cafe to use. cross your fingers and say a prayer that my luggage finds me. i had the most essentials and valuables in my carry on bags. British Airways was front page news this week. they have a new terminal at heathrow airport. i was on one of the first planes to go through there. and they lost everyones luggage. over 100 planes. The news says they did not treat us by law as required and we are all eligible for 5000£. that translates to over $10,000 i think.

Wow Traci, sounds like a streak of very bad luck for you. Indeed, the mess at Heathrow does not seem to have cleared yet. Good thing you are not completely amongst strangers, and I am certain Enzo is taking good care of you, or else I will have to PK him whenever he decides to log on to EL :-D.

Try and get the rest you need sweetie, and dont get too worked up about it. In any case there are good arrangements for when your luggage gets lost, and iirc you even have the right to an instant cash payout advance to it to get the bare necessities. But surely you have investigated this already.

It can only go up from here, so good times ahead, just keep that in mind!

Hugs,

Loes
